Google Business Profile verification: how it works, and what to do when it fails
How Google verifies a business profile, the video shot list for restaurants, new photo and ID options seen in 2026, and what to do when verification fails.

You filmed the video on your phone between lunch and dinner, uploaded it, and a few days later Google asked for another one. Until it goes through, you can't even reply to your reviews.
To verify a Google Business Profile, use one of the methods Google offers you (phone, text, email, live video call, postcard or a recorded video), then follow its steps exactly. For a restaurant video, record one unbroken clip of at least 30 seconds, live on your phone, showing the street, your sign and something only staff can open. If it fails, tap "Review issues" and re-record with what was missing. Last checked: 4 November 2026.
How does Google Business Profile verification work?
Verification proves to Google that you run the business at that address, and it gives you ownership of the profile. Google's review help is blunt: "Before you can reply to reviews, you must verify your business."
You don't choose the method. Google's help page Verify your business on Google says: "Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed." They depend on your business type, public information, region and hours, and some businesses need more than one. Use the method you're offered, and prepare for it like this:
| Method you're offered | How it works | Prepare this |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or text | A code to your business number | Answer the call yourself: automated phone systems can't receive it |
| Steps sent to the address on the screen | Access to that exact inbox | |
| Live video call | A Google representative watches you show the site | Be on site, "within the opening hours of your location", with keys and the till |
| Postcard | A code posted to the address | No edits for up to 30 days: "Most codes arrive within 14 days"; codes "expire after 30 days" |
| Video recording | You record and upload a clip in the app | The shot list below, a permanent sign, an empty room |
| Search Console or bulk | Instant, if your site or group already qualifies | Nothing |
Google says: "If your business is eligible for video verification, we recommend that you use this option." Reviews take "up to five working days", and "On rare occasions, reviews may take longer."
Who can verify. Google's eligibility and ownership guidelines say "Only business owners or authorized representatives may verify". A representative, such as an agency or a booking provider, must "Always work directly with the business owner to complete verification." For a recorded video, someone has to be on site with keys either way.
What's changed in 2026?
On the forum where practitioners bring hard cases, verification problems are nearly as common as suspensions. Our analysis of the 277 threads started on the Local Search Forum's nine Google Business Profile, Maps and reviews boards between 1 January and 31 October 2026 (counted 4 November 2026):
| Finding | Threads |
|---|---|
| About verification | 36 of 277 |
| Of those, about video (recorded or live) | 25 of 36 |
| Of those, ending in "no more ways to verify" or all methods exhausted | 4 of 36 |
| Of those, reporting a new photo or government ID option | 3 of 36 |
| Of those, involving a restaurant, café, pub or bar | 0 of 36 |
Method: we listed every thread by start date, classed it by title, and searched the opening posts. The forum's posters are mostly agencies handling hard cases, so this shows what goes wrong, not how often.
Three things stand out:
- New methods are being tested. In September and October 2026, forum regulars reported being offered verification by photo and by uploading a government ID ("Your ID is only used for verification and won't be shown publicly"). Neither appears on Google's verification help page yet. One poster said a profile verified with a driving licence was live in 10 minutes. If you're offered one, it's a real option; don't wait for it.
- Some reinstated profiles come back unverified. Practitioners reported this through mid-2026 after suspensions. If yours does, verify straight away.
- Verified owners get more control. Google's 16 April 2026 Maps update added email alerts so "verified and active owners" can review important edits to their profiles before they go live.
What must a verification video show?
Google's video verification requirements ask a storefront business, which includes almost every restaurant, to show three things:
- Location: "street signs, building numbers, nearby businesses, or familiar places".
- Existence: "Make sure your business name is clearly printed on a permanent fixture", such as a sign, wall or window. It must match the name on your profile (see Google Business Profile for restaurants).
- Management: things only an employee can access. Google's examples are "a cash register, kitchen, storage room, or point-of-sale system".
The recording rules are strict: "An unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks", "At least 30 seconds long", "Recorded and uploaded from a mobile device through your Business Profile", and live only, because "pre-recorded videos aren't allowed." It must not include "Sensitive info like bank account, tax, or ID numbers", "Private info about you or others", or "Other people's faces."
A shot list for a restaurant verification video
This is built on Google's three requirements. Film before service, when the room is empty. Practise once without recording. Aim for 45 to 60 seconds in one take.
BEFORE YOU PRESS RECORD
[ ] Profile name matches the sign letter for letter
[ ] Sign is permanent (not a banner, chalkboard or A-board)
[ ] No guests or staff in the building, or staff out of shot
[ ] Card terminal screens, invoices and rotas face down or off
[ ] Keys in hand; till or POS ready to open
[ ] No profile edits made since you started verifying
VERIFICATION VIDEO SHOT LIST (one take, no cuts, no faces)
0:00 to 0:10 LOCATION
Stand across the street. Show the street sign or building number,
then pan slowly to the neighbouring shops on each side.
0:10 to 0:20 EXISTENCE
Walk to the entrance. Hold on the permanent sign for 3 seconds.
0:20 to 0:30 OPEN THE DOOR
Unlock the front or staff door with your keys, on camera.
0:30 to 0:45 INSIDE
Walk through the empty dining room, then into the kitchen or behind
the bar. Show branded items: menus, aprons, printed receipts.
0:45 to 1:00 MANAGEMENT
Open the till or cash drawer, or log in to the point-of-sale screen.
Keep card numbers, bank details and staff names out of shot.
FOOD HALL, HOTEL OR SHOPPING CENTRE UNIT (same take)
Start at the building's main entrance and its street address, walk
the route to your unit, then hold on your own sign at the counter.
Before uploading: check the sign is legible on playback. If not,
use "Try again" and re-record the whole thing.
Google's page doesn't cover units inside another building, so the food hall variant is our approach, not Google's.
When should a new restaurant verify?
Add the opening date to the profile, then verify once the permanent sign is up. Google's opening date help lets you enter a date "up to one year in the future". After you verify, "your profile shows up on Google 90 days prior to your opening date", and guests can't post reviews or photos until you open.
Our suggested timeline:
| Weeks before opening | Do this |
|---|---|
| 16 or more | Create the profile with the opening date; don't verify yet |
| 12 to 6 | Verify once the permanent sign is installed and the address is final |
| 6 to 2 | Add photos, menu and booking link; the profile is already public |
| Opening week | Check hours and special hours; Google shows a "Recently opened" tag for 90 days |
If the sign arrives late, wait for it. A recorded video without a permanent sign is likely to fail on "Business name not visible on storefront", and each failure narrows your options. To fit verification into the rest of your opening plan, see the pre-opening timeline in our guide to opening a restaurant in the UK.
Why does Google keep rejecting the video?
Google says "We'll share the reasons why your first video wasn't accepted." Its examples: "Business name not visible on storefront", "No nearby area shown", and "Missing proof of authorization to operate the business."
Other causes come from owners and practitioners, not Google: the clip was under 30 seconds, it had a cut, the sign didn't match the profile name, or a face or document was visible. A moderator on the Local Search Forum put it simply in 2024: "Being asked to upload again means the video was not accepted."
What do the verification failure messages mean?
From Google's verification help, plus one message practitioners report:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Get verified" appears again | Google "couldn't completely verify your business" | Re-verify, ideally with another method if offered |
| "Review issues" | Your video wasn't accepted | Tap Review issues, read the reasons, re-record |
| "Give additional info to re-verify" | "likely because some of your business details were recently updated" | Check your details, select Get verified, try again |
| "No more ways to verify" (reported by practitioners) | Every automatic method is used up | Use the contact option and ask for a live video call |
To retry a video, open your Business Profile on your phone, tap Review issues, and record a new video that includes everything from the first one plus the missing part. Google's video page also notes: "In some cases, videos fail to upload on the first try." Upload again before assuming a rejection.
What if one failed attempt blocks every other method?
Some owners report it. In April 2026 an owner wrote on the Local Search Forum: "Even after just one failed video verification attempt, Google seems to block any further verification methods." A moderator suggested the support button and asking for a live video call, and the owner later got one. In a September 2026 thread, a forum regular added that the contact option usually appears only once the automatic methods are used up.
If you're stuck:
- Don't delete and recreate a profile that already has reviews.
- Use the support or contact option inside the Business Profile and ask for a live video call.
- Have the shot list ready: the live call asks for the location, the business, and proof you manage it.
- Make sure the call happens during your listed opening hours, on site.
For a profile that was verified and then suspended, see Google Business Profile suspended.
Can TablePort handle this for you?
TablePort can't verify your profile or speed Google up; verification is between you and Google. Once the profile is verified:
- Connect it to TablePort by signing in with the Google account that manages it, then link each profile to the matching location. Existing reviews import.
- Choose who gets alerts. New 1 to 3 star reviews email the owners and managers you pick.
- Optionally keep it connected, by adding TablePort as a manager, so reviews keep syncing if the person who connected it leaves.
See the Google reviews page.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Google says reviews take up to five working days after you complete the steps, occasionally longer. Postcards add the post: most arrive within 14 days, and the code expires after 30. Search Console and bulk verification can be instant.
- Can I choose to verify by postcard instead of video?
No. Google says verification methods "are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed." If video is the only option shown, use the shot list above.
- Does the verification video have to be live?
Yes. Google says "pre-recorded videos aren't allowed." It must be one unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, recorded and uploaded from a phone through your Business Profile.
- Can a manager or agency verify my restaurant's profile?
Yes, if they are authorised. Google's guidelines say owners or authorised representatives may verify, and representatives must work directly with the owner. A recorded video still needs someone on site with keys.
- What happens if I edit my profile while waiting for the postcard?
The code can stop working. Google says "Do not edit your business name, address or category" and "Do not request a new code" while you wait. Verify first, then make changes.
