Someone left a fake 1-star review. How to get it removed from Google

What Google will and won't remove, how to report and appeal a fake review, the extortion form, and an evidence checklist for restaurant owners.

By the Facts checked 9 min read

You open your Google profile on a Monday morning and find a run of 1-star reviews from names you have never seen, some with no text at all. Your rating has dropped overnight.

You can't delete a Google review yourself. Google removes one only if it breaks Google's content policy: fake engagement, a conflict of interest, off-topic content, harassment, or no real experience of your restaurant behind it. It won't remove a review for being negative or unfair. Report each fake review, use Google's separate extortion form if anyone demands money, and appeal once if the report fails. Last checked: 4 November 2026.

Can you remove a Google review yourself?

No. A business owner cannot delete a review from a Google Business Profile. Only Google can, and only when the review breaks its rules. What you control is the report you send, the evidence behind it, and the public reply you leave while you wait.

This matters because the attacks are real and fast. On 4 November 2025, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that one restaurant, Provenance, received 39 one-star reviews overnight and fell from 4.8 to 3.9 stars. A 40th review offered to remove them for $250. Mish Mish fell from 4.5 to 3.8 in a single night. The next day the paper reported that Google had removed dozens of the reviews hours after the first story ran, and Provenance was back at 4.8. Most owners will not get a newspaper story, so the report itself has to do the work.

Which reviews will Google remove?

Google's Maps user contributed content policy is the test every report is judged against. In plain terms:

ReviewLikely outcomePolicy reason
Reviewer never visited, or reviewed the wrong restaurantRemovableContent must be based on an experience at that location
A burst of 1-star reviews from new accounts, or one person with several accountsRemovableFake engagement
A former employee, a rival restaurant or a relative of eitherRemovableConflict of interest
A demand for money to take reviews downRemovable, and report it as extortionFake engagement and extortion
Threats, slurs, or a staff member's personal detailsRemovableHarassment, hate speech, personal information
Politics or a rant about the area, not your restaurantRemovableOff-topic

If the review describes a real visit, however badly, the reply is your tool, not the report. See how to respond to negative reviews for wording.

How do you get a Google review removed?

You report it, and Google decides. Google's help page Report inappropriate reviews on your Business Profile gives two routes. The quick one: open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, select the Report icon next to the review, choose a reason and select Send report. The route that lets you track the decision and appeal is the Reviews Management Tool:

  1. Go to the Reviews Management Tool.
  2. Confirm the email address linked to your Business Profile, or switch account.
  3. Select your business.
  4. Select Continue, then "Report a new review for removal", then Continue.
  5. Next to the review, select Report.
  6. In the new tab, choose the reason that fits. Google's examples are Spam and Profanity.
  7. Select Submit.

Google says "Review evaluation typically takes several days." The tool then shows one of three statuses:

StatusWhat it meansYour next step
Decision pendingGoogle hasn't decided yetWait, and keep collecting evidence
Report reviewed - no policy violationGoogle decided the review staysAppeal once, with new evidence
Escalated - check your email for updatesThe final decision comes by emailWatch the inbox linked to the profile

Report each review separately and pick the reason that matches it: a former employee's review is a conflict of interest, a rant about parking in the area is off-topic. Keep the detail in your evidence file, because the appeal form is where you can explain it.

What if someone demands money to remove the reviews?

That is review extortion, and since autumn 2025 Google has a separate channel for it. Google's help article Report negative review extortion scams describes the pattern as "a sudden increase in 1-star and 2-star reviews", followed by a demand for money or favours to remove them. The merchant extortion form is only for owners who have been directly targeted with a demand. In Philadelphia the demand was $250 through a money-transfer app; earlier waves reported in 2022 asked for gift cards. The method changes, the pattern doesn't.

Google's rules for this situation are short:

  • Do not engage with or pay the people behind it.
  • Do not try to resolve it yourself by offering money or services.
  • Collect the evidence straight away, before messages are deleted.

Google investigates and tells you the outcome, but says it can't share details of the investigation.

The evidence checklist

Copy this into a note the moment you spot an attack. It covers what both the standard report and the extortion form ask for.

REVIEW ATTACK EVIDENCE: [restaurant name], [address]
Business Profile link: [paste link]

1. Timeline
   - First suspicious review noticed: [date, time]
   - First demand received (if any): [date, time]
   - Any earlier attempts: [dates]

2. Each suspicious review
   - Direct link to the review
   - Screenshot showing the reviewer name, date and star rating
   - Link to the reviewer's profile (note: new account? other reviews
in other cities on the same day?)

3. Your own records
   - Was there a booking or order that matches? [yes / no / can't tell]
   - Staff on shift that day who could recall the table

4. Any demand for money or favours
   - Screenshots of every message, with date, time and sender
   - Sender's name, username, email, phone number or social profile
   - Payment method requested (bank transfer, money app, gift cards)

5. What we did
   - Reports submitted: [dates, reasons chosen]
   - Extortion form submitted: [date]
   - Appeal submitted: [date, review links]

Keep your own booking and order checks private. They are for your judgement and for Google, not for the public reply.

How do you appeal when Google says no violation?

You get one appeal per review: Google calls it a "one-time appeal". From the same help page:

  1. Open the Reviews Management Tool and confirm your account and business.
  2. Select Continue, then "Check the status of a review I reported previously and appeal options", then Continue.
  3. At the bottom, select "Appeal eligible reviews".
  4. Choose the reviews to appeal. You can select up to 10 at a time.
  5. Select Continue, then "Submit an appeal", fill in the form in the new tab and submit.

Google emails the result. If the review breaks policy it comes down; if not, it stays and the status reads "Escalated - check your email for updates". Use the appeal to add what the first report lacked: the timeline, the reviewer's other activity, and any demand for money. Repeating "this is fake" without new evidence rarely changes the decision.

Why is your rating still low after Google removes the reviews?

Because the average is arithmetic, and the damage happens faster than the clean-up. Google does not publish exactly how it calculates the rating it displays, so treat the numbers below as a simple illustration.

StageReviewsTotal starsAverage
Before the attack2009204.6
After 40 fake 1-star reviews2409604.0
Google removes 30 of the 402109304.43
Google removes all 402009204.6

If Google removed none of them, getting back to 4.6 would take 360 new five-star reviews: (960 + 5 × 360) ÷ (240 + 360) = 4.6. That is why the report is worth the effort, and why every partial removal counts. In the Philadelphia case, Mish Mish recovered to 4.3 only after more than 85 customers posted five-star reviews, according to the Inquirer.

What to do when a fake review stays up

Some reports fail even with good evidence. You still have options:

  • Reply once, calmly. Every guest who reads the review sees your reply under it. Do not accuse the reviewer of lying in public, and never say what your records show about a named person.
  • Ask for more genuine reviews. A steady flow of real reviews dilutes a fake one. Ask every guest, not only the happy ones; see how to get more Google reviews.
  • Escalate through the legal route only with advice. A review that makes false, damaging statements about your business may be defamatory, but that is a claim against the author, not against Google's policy.

Reply wording that stays safe is in how to respond to negative reviews, reply 15, along with what never to put in a public reply. Two things matter most here: don't threaten the reviewer (in the US the FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials rule, 16 CFR 465.7, bans unfounded legal threats), and don't offer anything for a changed or deleted review, which Google bans and the UK CMA's fake reviews guidance treats as commissioning a banned review.

If Google has paused new reviews on your profile after a spike, that is a protection, not a penalty. Our suspended profile guide shows how to tell a review pause from a suspension. For a defamation claim or a legal letter, check with a solicitor or attorney for your situation.

Can TablePort handle this for you?

TablePort can't delete a Google review; only Google can. It helps you spot an attack early and check it properly:

  1. Connect your Google Business Profile and link each profile to its location. Reviews for every site land in one inbox.
  2. Choose who gets low-rating alerts. New 1 to 3 star reviews email the owners and managers you pick, so a sudden burst is seen quickly.
  3. Check your own records before you report. Reviews sit beside your bookings and orders, so you can look for a matching visit and fill in the evidence checklist.
  4. Reply from the same screen, writing your own reply or editing an AI draft. Nothing is posted until a person presses send.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google take to remove a fake review?

Google says review evaluation "typically takes several days". The Reviews Management Tool shows the status as decision pending until Google decides. Extortion cases go through a separate form, and Google does not publish a timescale for those. If the first report fails, you can appeal once per review.

Can I pay a company to remove Google reviews?

No one outside Google can delete a review. Services that promise removal can only file the same reports you can, and anyone who offers to remove reviews for a fee after an attack may be the person behind it. Google's advice on extortion is not to engage with or pay them, and to report them through the merchant extortion form.

How many reviews can I appeal at once?

Up to 10. In the Reviews Management Tool, choose "Check the status of a review I reported previously and appeal options", then "Appeal eligible reviews", and select up to 10 reviews in one appeal. Each review can only be appealed once, so include all your evidence.

Should I reply to a fake review?

Usually yes, once and calmly. Guests reading your profile see the reply, and a short, neutral answer that invites the reviewer to contact you looks better than silence or an argument. Do not accuse the reviewer of lying, and do not share anything from your booking or order records in public, including "we have no record of you". You can reply and report the same review.

Will removing fake reviews restore my rating straight away?

Removal takes the reviews out of the count, but only for the reviews Google actually removes. If Google removes some and not others, the remaining fake reviews keep pulling the average down, and recovering through new reviews alone takes a large number of five-star ratings.
