Valentine's Day 2027 falls on a Sunday: set menus, sittings and deposits for UK restaurants

Valentine's Day 2027 is a Sunday. Two sittings, a couples' table layout, set menu pricing from ONS restaurant price data and booking terms to copy.

Valentine's Day is the one night of the year when every table is a two-top, and in 2027 it falls on a Sunday, the night many kitchens normally close early.

Valentine's Day 2027 is Sunday 14 February. The plan that fits most UK restaurants is a set menu across the weekend, with two fixed dinner sittings on the Sunday itself, a room re-laid for couples, and a per-person deposit with its terms shown before guests book. Price the menu from your own à la carte, not a guess: ONS price data put the median UK restaurant main at £16.95 last February. Have the booking page live by Monday 18 January at the latest, because most Valentine's restaurant searches come in the final two weeks.

This guide covers the Sunday decision, what guests paid last February, a sittings plan you can copy, the couples' table layout, set menu costing with VAT, and booking terms. It does not repeat the deposit law; that is in our restaurant deposit policy guide.

Last checked: 5 November 2026.

What changes when Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday?

Three things: the weekend spreads the demand, Sunday staffing is harder, and Monday is a working day.

Couples who want a Saturday night out will book Saturday 13 February and call it Valentine's. Couples who want the date itself will book Sunday, but earlier than on a Saturday, because Monday 15 February is a school and working day. Your Sunday dinner shift probably closes early, has fewer staff on the rota, and may not get a delivery that morning.

Two other dates sit in the same week. Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is 9 February 2027 and Ash Wednesday is 10 February, both set by Easter Sunday falling on 28 March 2027. A cafe or brunch spot may get more from Pancake Day than from a Sunday Valentine's dinner.

Pick a plan from your usual trade:

Your usual weekendValentine's 2027 plan
Busy Saturdays, Sunday lunch, closed Sunday eveningSet menu on Saturday 13; open Sunday 14 for one early dinner sitting
Busy Saturdays, open Sunday eveningSet menu Friday to Sunday; two dinner sittings on Sunday
Pub with a big Sunday roastNormal roast at lunch; set menu for the dinner sittings only
Neighbourhood bistro, quieter weekendsSet menu Saturday and Sunday; à la carte on Friday
Cafe or daytime onlySkip Sunday dinner; run Pancake Day on 9 February and a Valentine's brunch

Order for the whole weekend on the Thursday or Friday delivery, so Sunday does not depend on a supplier who may not deliver.

When do couples book Valentine's dinner?

Late, and mostly in the final fortnight. Google Ads keyword data (November 2026) shows UK searches for "valentines day restaurant" reaching 18,100 in February 2026. Our analysis of Google Trends daily search interest for the same phrase (downloaded 5 November 2026) shows when those searches happen, in the eight weeks up to and including 14 February:

SeasonFinal 7 daysFinal 14 daysFinal 21 daysMore than 4 weeks before
202554%77%91%0%
202641%81%95%5%

Method: we summed the daily index over the 56 days and took the share falling in each period. This is a lower-volume search: Trends reported zero on 39 of the 56 days in 2026, so treat the table as a shape, not a precise split. A second phrase, "valentines day menu", gave the same shape in 2026 (70% in the final 14 days).

The decision rule: menu and booking page live by Monday 18 January 2027 at the latest, four weeks out, and earlier if your menu is costed. Email your list and post on your Google profile then, and again on Monday 1 February, the start of the fortnight when most searching happens. Couples who already know you book earlier than strangers who search, so the first email often fills the second sitting.

How many sittings should I run on Valentine's Sunday?

Two fixed dinner sittings suit most rooms. A third rarely works: it pushes the first sitting too early or the last one past the time Sunday guests want to be home.

Here is a sittings plan for a 40-seat dining room. Tables are released in three waves, 15 minutes apart, so the kitchen is never firing 19 starters at once. Each first-sitting table gets 2 hours 15 minutes and a 15-minute reset.

WaveTablesFirst sitting arrivesTable needed backSecond sitting arrives
A6 two-tops17:3019:4520:00
B6 two-tops17:4520:0020:15
C6 two-tops and 1 four-top18:0020:1520:30

The second sitting is open-ended. Its last guests arrive at 20:30 and are usually gone by 22:45.

Copy this into the booking page and the rota:

VALENTINE'S SUNDAY SITTINGS PLAN (14 February 2027)

Before service
[ ] Room re-laid for couples by 16:30 (see table plan)
[ ] Wave A, B and C tables marked on the floor plan
[ ] Set menu prep finished by 17:00; desserts portioned

First sitting (17:30, 17:45, 18:00 arrivals)
[ ] Glass of fizz poured as each table sits
[ ] Starters away within 15 minutes of each wave arriving
[ ] Desserts called by 19:15 for wave A
[ ] Bills offered with dessert, not after it

Turn (19:45 to 20:30)
[ ] Each table reset in 15 minutes: cloth, cutlery, candle
[ ] Second-sitting guests who arrive early wait at the bar

Second sitting (20:00, 20:15, 20:30 arrivals)
[ ] Same pace; no time limit on the table
[ ] Kitchen clean-down starts after the last main goes out

If your Sunday team cannot run two sittings, run one at 18:30 with a later finish and price it like the second sitting.

How should I lay out the room for couples?

Make as many two-tops as the room allows, because a couple on a four-top wastes half its seats. Count your tables before you take a single booking.

Worked example: the 40-seat room above normally has 14 two-tops and 3 four-tops. Sold to couples as it stands, that is 17 tables and 34 covers per sitting. Split two of the four-tops, if they are two tables pushed together, and the room becomes 18 two-tops and 1 four-top: 19 tables and 38 covers per sitting. Across two sittings, that is 8 more covers. At the set menu margins below, the split is worth £262.16 of cash margin for an hour of moving furniture.

Other layout rules that hold on the night:

  • Space the two-tops. Couples notice when they can hear the next table. If a split leaves tables too close, sell one fewer.
  • Know your weak tables. The one by the door or the kitchen pass goes to the first sitting, or to the guest who booked last.
  • Keep one four-top. Double dates and groups of friends, especially on Saturday 13 February, still book.
  • Set out the room on the floor plan before booking opens, so online bookings only offer the tables you actually lay.

How much should a Valentine's set menu cost?

Start from what the same dinner costs on your own à la carte menu, then check the margin. Guests can do that sum from your normal menu, so a set price far above it needs the extras to show (fizz on arrival, an extra course), and a price below it discounts the one night you would fill anyway.

Our analysis of the Office for National Statistics CPI price quotes (February and September 2026 files, downloaded 5 November 2026) shows what UK restaurants charged in the month of the last Valentine's Day. These are the prices ONS collectors recorded in restaurants across the UK for its inflation figures:

Item (ONS description)February 2026 medianMiddle half of prices, February 2026September 2026 median
Restaurant main course£16.95£13.95 to £18.95£16.95
Restaurant sweet course (dessert)£7.79£6.25 to £8.25£7.95
Glass of wine (175 to 250ml)£5.69£4.39 to £6.90£6.00
Bottle of wine, drunk on the premises£25.25£22.50 to £27.85£26.75
Restaurant cup of coffee£3.25£2.99 to £3.75£3.50

Method: the median of every valid quote for each item (between 297 and 361 quotes per item in February 2026), unweighted. ONS does not collect a starter. At those medians, a main, a dessert and a glass of wine each came to £60.86 for a couple last February. Over the year to September 2026, restaurant and cafe prices rose 4.5% (ONS series D7EW), so a menu you repeat from last year needs about that much to stand still; our menu price guide covers how to size a rise.

The same CPI data says which course to re-cost first. In the 12 months to September 2026, shop prices of fresh fish rose 11.4% and lamb 5.8%, while beef fell 0.7%, butter 6.2% and chocolate 0.7%. These are shop prices, not your wholesale invoices, but if last year's menu had a fish course, check that line before you reprint the price.

Now cost one guest's menu, divide the price by 1.2 for VAT, and compare the margin per couple with an ordinary night. A set menu works because it narrows the prep, speeds the kitchen and lets you include a glass of fizz that costs you little and feels generous.

Worked example, for a restaurant whose à la carte starter is £9, main £19, dessert £8.50 and glass of fizz £8 (£44.50 a head), with illustrative supplier costs:

Per guestCost
Bread and a small first course£0.60
Starter£2.40
Main£5.80
Dessert£1.30
Petit four£0.30
Glass of fizz (125ml from a £7.50 bottle)£1.25
Subtotal£11.65
With 5% waste allowance£12.23
SittingPrice per person, inc VATNet of VATCash margin per personPer coupleGross profit
First£49£40.83£28.60£57.2070.0%
Second£59£49.17£36.94£73.8875.1%

With both sittings full at 38 covers each, the set menu alone earns £2,490.52 of cash margin before drinks. The first sitting at £49 is £4.50 above the à la carte equivalent and adds a first course and a petit four; the second at £59 is the premium slot, and its later table and open-ended evening are what the extra £10 buys. Pricing the earlier sitting lower is fair to guests who give their table back at 19:45, and it helps the first sitting sell.

Use the menu price calculator to set the price from a target margin, and our GP calculator guide for the formulas. The no-show cost calculator shows what one empty two-top on the second sitting costs you: £73.88 of set menu margin, before drinks, on the one night you cannot resell it.

What should the Valentine's booking terms say?

The guest needs five facts before paying: the price, the sitting time, when the table is needed back, the deposit and the cancellation cut-off. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, terms must be fair and transparent, and the deposit policy guide covers how much to take and when to refund. For reminder timing and the wider no-show tactics, see how to reduce restaurant no-shows.

What do I do with the couples I cannot seat?

Offer them Saturday or Friday first, then a place on the Sunday waiting list, and anyone left over the same set menu on a quieter night such as Friday 19 February. How to run the list on a sold-out night, from text timing to quoting by sitting, is in our restaurant waitlist guide.

If you are planning the next family occasion too, Mother's Day 2027 is Sunday 7 March, three weeks later. Our Mother's Day bookings guide covers lunch sittings and large family tables.

Can TablePort handle this for you?

TablePort Reservations covers the booking side of this plan:

  1. Deposits per shift. Set a deposit and cancellation terms for the Valentine's dinner shift, collected through Stripe. Guests read the terms before they confirm.
  2. Reminders. Guests get a confirmation and a reminder before they arrive.
  3. Waitlist. On the night, walk-in couples join the list from their phone, and you text them when a table frees up.
  4. Deposit on the bill. Seat the couple and the deposit is credited to the bill as its own line.

The limit: TablePort applies the terms you set. It cannot tell you whether your deposit amount is fair under consumer law. See reservations.

Frequently asked questions

What day is Valentine's Day 2027?

Sunday 14 February 2027. Saturday 13 February will be the busiest night for many restaurants, and Monday 15 February is a normal working day, so Sunday dinner bookings tend to come earlier in the evening.

Should I do a set menu or à la carte on Valentine's Day?

A set menu, for most restaurants. It narrows the prep, speeds the kitchen and makes two sittings possible. Keep à la carte for the Friday if you want to serve guests who dislike set menus.

How long should a Valentine's sitting be?

About 2 hours 15 minutes for a first sitting, with 15 minutes to reset the table. The second sitting can be open-ended. Tell guests the time the table is needed back when they book, not when they sit down.

How much should I charge for a Valentine's set menu?

Start from your own à la carte price for the same courses and a glass of fizz, then check the margin. ONS price data puts the median UK restaurant main course at £16.95 and dessert at £7.79 in February 2026. In our worked example, a menu costing £12.23 per head earns £28.60 per person at £49 and £36.94 at £59, both including VAT.

Can I take a deposit for Valentine's Day bookings?

Yes, if the terms are clear before the guest books and the amount is fair for what you would lose. Our deposit policy guide covers how much to take, when to refund and how VAT applies.

Should I open on Monday 15 February?

Only if Mondays normally pay for themselves. Valentine's weekend leaves a tired team and an empty fridge, and the following Friday is a better night for an overflow offer.
